Eastern Promises is a 2007 gangster thriller film directed by David Cronenberg. The film tells of a British midwife's interactions with the Russian Mafia in London and stars Naomi Watts, Viggo Mortensen and Vincent Cassel.
Anna Khitrova is a young woman who works as a midwife at a London hospital. She finds a Russian-language diary on the body of Tatiana, a 14-year-old girl who dies in childbirth. Throughout the film, Anna Khitrova tries to find a home for the dead mother's baby girl. Anna asks her Kiev-born uncle Stephan to help her with the translation of the diary. Her uncle has a brother Semyon who is “thief in law”. Through Semyon and her uncle, Anna comes to learn that Semyon and his unstable son, Kirill, had abused, addicted her to heroin, forced into prostitution, and raped the girl. Semyon's driver is Russian Nikolai Luzhin, who serves as the family's driver and "cleaner", dumping bodies in the River Thames. There are two killers and they try to punish Kirill because he killed their brother. That is why Semyon sponsors Nikolai Luzhin as a full member of their family. This killers think that Nikolai Luzhin is Kirill and they try to kill him, but in the end it is revealed that Nikolai is actually an FSB agent who has infiltrated the gang, working under license by the British Government.
The film deals with problems of Russian life in 90’s. The film is either a thriller or a drama.
Eastern Promises is a very special film. It either helps you to get into a Russian life or to understand the truth of the laws. I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys films like this.
